Playground

In Playground Kristina Tsoulis-Reay explores children’s perception of space in which perspective is evolving and the distinction between the viewing subject and material world is blurred.

Tsoulis-Reay composes figurative works from her own childhood photographs using varied painting techniques.  Areas of impressionistic blur interact with flat abstract shapes and loud blobs of paint.  Each work is the outcome of a playful negotiation between painting styles, relating the fluid space of childhood to the act of painting itself.

Kristina Tsoulis-Reay was born in Adelaide and grew up in New Zealand. She currently lives and works in Melbourne.  She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) at RMIT, Melbourne in 2004 and a Master of Fine Arts (Painting) at Monash University, Melbourne in 2010.  In 2010 she was a recipient of the Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart grant and in 2002 she received a Siemans Fine Art Travel Scholarship.  Her Solo exhibitions include Submarine, Light Projects, Melbourne, 2010; Interior Horizon, Monash University, Melbourne, 2009; Strange Loop, Joint Hassles, Melbourne, 2007; The Living Room, Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, 2005; and Small World, Westspace, Melbourne, 2005.
